Today, after 4 years of hard work and two public consultations, B Lab released the new B Corp certification standards! While the standards have undergone minor updates since B Lab's founding in 2006, this is the largest overhaul to date. The updated standards establish a stronger, more transparent foundation that meets the demands of these times for all businesses that are committed to building a global economy that is inclusive, equitable and regenerative.
The new standards are characterized by two key pillars: the Foundation Requirements and the Impact Topic Requirements. To become B Corp certified, companies need to take action across both.
Foundation requirements
Meet the eligibility requirements for B Corp certification i.e. the company is legally incorporated, in operation for at least 12 months and comply with local and national laws
Commit to stakeholder governance: companies must adopt the B Corp legal requirement and sigh the B Corp Declaration of Interdependence.
Impact topics requirements
Companies are required to take meaningful action across key social, environmental and governance Impact Topics areas.
The specific requirements, which can range from 20 to 124 requirements total will depend on your company's size, sector and industry.
